Despite being a self-proclaimed nerd, I have never spent any money on an online game. In fact, I usually spend my time making fun of the people who do. I’ve just never seen the logic in continually paying money for a game you’ve already bought.
That said, I am somewhat of a hypocrite: I play Flyff – Fly For Fun – a free MMORPG.
It can’t remember exactly why I started playing it, but I kept playing it because it gave me and my ex something to do. I haven’t played it since we broke up, but I decided to check it out tonight, and low and behold! An update!
Flyff is now in version 11! With lots of new stuffs and bonuses!
I got kind of excited. I mean, it’s 3 a.m. right now – I think that says something. I leveled my character from 14 to 18, and I was pretty psyched. Till I noticed how I was allocating my stats.
I had a lv. 20 assist (cleric-ish char) beforehand, but screwed up the stats, and decided to start over. Guess what? I screwed up again! XD
I’m aiming for a full-support character, which means pouring all my stat points into intelligence. Somehow, I’m guessing because my eye’s been acting up, I poured all my stat points into dexterity – the MOST USELESS stat for an assist.
Gpotato, the company who hosts the game, makes its money by having a cash store for people to buy in-game items, and it’s fairly effective. I mean, they just expanded. Again. I’d say their marketing strategy works.
One of the items they sell is a re-stat item.
The irony hurts.
It’s $20, and the question I’m asking myself, besides how they’re getting away with this highway robbery, is whether it’s worth it. I figured it if it were $5 or $10, I could do that.
But $20?
I’m honestly torn. I just spent 2 hours, and the only reason I moved up 4 levels was because they’ve got some kind of beginner buff-ing event going on – assists are usually weaker than the people playing them. Overall, I’d estimate I’ve spent 6-8 hours on this character already, and would have to spend at least that much to get back to where I am if I start over.
I feel like I’m losing my MMO virginity.
I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you.
